Mario is a special breed of mushroom given false memories and a backstory so that they will grow to have a hero complex and protect the mushroom kingdom. Only one sprouts from the mother mycelium at a time.
Hmm. That doesn’t very neatly explain the ones that pop up in places where it’s impossible to die.
