As for the EU, we should fund a federated or decentralised system. I think it works well on Lemmy. For example I know not to trust feddit.org for anything related to Palestine. Content on other servers shows their pro-Israel bias.

I think a system like that could benefit the US to a point, at least until the government block all external news and commentary.

Yes, I remember reading about these huge migrations to Linux in the early 2000s, only for Microsoft to open up shop in the area and start lobbying for a reversal. It was always disappointing to hear cases of returning to MS. Let’s hope they stay the course this time.

It seems like a good alternative so some of the most popular engines. I think I’ll stick with Ecosia, since on top of being EU based, they also make the world a better place.

Absolute centralisation caused the mess. My suggestion is just initial centralisation. It lets people get active with the platform while they figure out the basics rather than paralysing them with options up front.

What Lemmy and Mastodon need to do is to have one canonical instance that they manage well themselves. Everyone gets signed up to that initially and those who want to transfer to another instance afterwards can. That alone could have prevented BlueSky taking the lead the way it did.
