    It seems unlikely to me that what your legal name is, is what matters. If it did, that would mean you couldn’t kill anyone who is not legally documented anywhere using the Death Note, which seems like an odd restriction for a supernatural notebook to have (there’s also the matter of people who are documented under different names in different jurisdictions or with different spellings etc.).

    So I imagine it’s about what either the writer or the writee acknowledges as their name. However, one of the rules of the Death Note is:

    This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

    This suggests to me that it’s the writer’s cognition that matters, meaning this wouldn’t work because the writer would still acknowledge someone’s dead name as their actual name.

    I wonder if the shinigami eyes lets you see who is trans, like is their eventually chosen name above their head before they know? Or does the change of legal name form need to be signed in triplicate before it switches?

      probably the birth name, even if you transitioned, its not like you changed the biological sex.(as in chromsones to x and y)

      Well the name shown is the name you’d use to kill them, so if that were the case, it would imply that using their given name wouldn’t work.

      If that was the case, it seems likely that Light would have killed enough people to have attempted to killed some eggs, in which event, he probably would have noticed that there are certain people he couldn’t kill and would have freaked out about it.

        the lady that was investigating light yagami gave a fake name, and he was able to kill her by getting her real name eventually, so i would assume even if transitioned and changed the name, the birth name would kill you.

      The eyes also show someone’s time of death, which implies foresight, meaning it’s likely the name they end up dying with, which could change if the time was extended, but that very famously kills any shinigami who makes that happen.

    Interesting question(don’t mean any offense by it)… If you had transitioned already and he wrote your transitioned name… Would you transition back to avoid death?

      i assume it will still kill you if had your birth name, since the shinigami can see your true name and time of death, even if you gave a fake one, changed it, the orignal would still be in effect. assuming the shinigami eyes isnt using non-linear time to ascertain your name.

      you could just change your name again. before birth certificates and all that bs existed you could just go by a new name in every single town you visited
