The petition site change.org is extremely popular, but many are surprised to learn it is a for-profit corporation. It isn’t a charity, it exists to make money and has investors who expect a return.
Giving a profit-making corporation your real name as well as your opinions on a wide range of topics is not a wise idea in the long term. That sort of data is very valuable to advertisers, and sooner or later a company may be tempted to sell it to them.
Governmental Petition Portals
For political issues, you should petition governments directly on issues. This more easily gets the attention of people in power, is less likely to sell your data, and governments are often compelled by law to respond to petitions which receive enough signatures.
In some countries, popular petitions may trigger a parliamentary debate or even a referendum.
(The link op posts has a list with links to these Governmental Petition Portals, but not any other alternative.)
Thanks so much. @Sunshine@lemmy.ca is a prolific poster and extremely kind and reasonable, and also human. We learn from and grow by exchanging ideas and improving them.
I know, i have user tags enabled to track votes and there just a few other prolific posters who I gave as many upvotes as I gave her. When there is no further info in the post or when there is no archived link and I hit a paywall, I copy and paste part of the text or the archived url for when I return to lemmy and I leave it for the next one to find. Saves me time when I don’t have to open a webpage, so this way I pay it forward.

We The People petitions haven’t been a thing since Trump’s first term ended. It doesn’t seem like this has been reported to the project’s codeberg yet, so I’m filing an issue about this right now.
